What’s racism?

Racism has a lot of definitions but most of these definitions share the common feature of members of one race considering themselves to be superior to other races. Racism involves thinking of people of different skin colours or races are somehow ‘different’, alien or less than human.

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines racism as:

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

This is an idea that has been discredited long ago as has the idea that human beings can be classified according to ‘race’.

In the 20th century several different states were set up based on the idea that some races were superior to others or that different races should be forced to live apart. These regimes, such as Nazi Germany and apartheid South Africa, were the setting for some of the most horrifying crimes ever committed.

Though the majority of these governments have been overthrown racist groups wishing to recreate these sort of regimes still exist, and are active in Cumbria, and this is the reason that Maryport Against Racism exists.

So if we’re the anti-racists, who are the opposition?
